We're about 2 weeks away from the new year which means a lot of people are probably starting to think or talk about what resolution they are going to try and do this year. I've heard from friends this month how at the start of a new year they want to lose weight, quit smoking, eat better among others. Let’s face it, some will either pick the wrong resolution or just not pick one at all. Trust me, I get it. I’m not really one for new years resolutions. I always aimed too high and eventually buckled. It’s been years since I even bothered making any. So this year I decided I’d give it another go. This time, nothing crazy hard or even specific. Like working out, dieting and so many other things, I’ve found going directly from 0 to 100 on almost anything usually leads to failure. So use these suggestions as loose guidelines to make small but significant changes that can ultimately become positive habits. I’ve talked to friends, family and scoured the internet to come up with a list of some of my favorite resolutions for 2023. So if you’ve given up on your resolution or decided not to make one maybe this list will help!
Build a budget- This is probably one of the more avoided ones and trust me I get it. No one likes to worry about money. But trust me knowing your situation will ultimately lead to less stress. After the initial terror of seeing what you spend monthly, you’ll immediately eliminate the worst case scenario thinking. No matter how bad your financial situation is, at some point in time we all think it’s worse than it is. By actually knowing where you stand you eliminate that pointless worry. Also you will definitely come across some unnecessary monthly costs that you’ll be able to get rid of and save money. With apps like Mint it makes it so easy to know where all your money is going!
Work out your brain-Trust me I love turning off my brain and zoning out in front of the tv as much as anyone. But if you take 10-15 minutes a day to exercise your brain you will see both short and long term payoffs. There have been numerous health studies that show that mental exercise can prevent and fight numerous health issues that come with old age. But it can also help make you think quicker and sharper in your everyday life. And with the apps readily available to you on your phone, it's easier and more fun than ever. You just need to find a brain game you love and make it part of your daily habits. Between crossword puzzles, sudoku, trivia games and more there’s basically unlimited options to work out your brain!
Plan a vacation- This is one I think most people will be able to get on board with. Hey even if it’s a bucket list vacation that you’re not necessarily going on this year this can be a great exercise to boost serotonin and help you relax. You get to pick a place you’d love to be and research all the amazing things it has to offer and then pick your favorites. Not only will this be extremely fun, but when you do visit that place you will have a foolproof playbook to making the most of your vacation!
Find a reason to go outside- With more and more people working from home it’s easy to find yourself trying to remember when the last time you left the house was. Even if you don’t work from home many people aren’t leaving their houses for much more than that. This is your wake up call to do anything outside. There’s so many daily activities you can do outside that will lead to better health! Some ideas are; read a book, do yoga, walk your dog, start a garden. Some sunlight and light movement will lead to better moods and health!
Sleep more- Don’t threaten me with a good time! Seriously, I don’t need to be told twice to sleep more. Funny enough, growing up I hated sleeping. I always felt like I was missing something. I always tried to be the last one to go to sleep and the first one to wake up. As I got older I quickly found the error in my ways. But as much as I love to sleep, some old habits die hard. As much as I blame my lack of sleep on having things to do, in reality I waste a lot of time at night before I go to sleep. I’m pretty sure most people could find an extra 30 min-1 hour of time to add to their sleep schedule. Plus more sleep leads to better water retention, weight loss, less stress and much more health benefits!
Create art- This is one I’m focusing on. As someone who grew up strictly playing sports year round, I never played an instrument, sang or did any kind of art. And I’m not sure where you went to school but we didn’t do much in the mandatory art and music classes throughout school. So I kind of feel like I missed out on a hidden talent. More likely, I just missed out on a fun hobby. With so many options, this is a great resolution because you can spend the year trying out all the different things you can do until you find one you love. Some of the things I’m looking forward to trying are; pottery, painting, karaoke, piano (instruments). The best part is this is just for you so it doesn’t matter what the final product is.
