Just bought one of our luxurious new bed sets? Then you’re halfway done. Now that your bedroom looks amazing it's time to talk about how it functions. Specifically the mattress. If you’re buying a new bed, it’s probably time to get a new mattress. Growing up it’s something I never thought about. There was a mattress on my bed and I slept on it until I moved out. Through college the dorms and student housing always provided them. They were never a thought to me. However as I have gotten older and back problems have become a reality, a mattress that is not only quality but fits me and my needs has skyrocketed past nearly every need besides food and water.
I mean the average person spends about 26 years sleeping in their life which equals 227,760 hours. If that’s not bad enough we also spend 7 years trying to get to sleep. That's 33 years or 12,045 days spent in bed. Then you add in all the science about what a quality sleep can do for you mentally and physically and what else is there to say. The price tags on mattresses were an eye opener for me the first time I looked. But when buying things now I don’t look at the total cost. I think about how much I’m going to use that and calculate an estimated price per use. For example if a pack of 100 napkins costs $1, I know I’ll be spending a penny every time I use a napkin. Now the average mattress lasts 7-10 years. Approximately 2,500-3,500 sleep on that mattress. Now that nice mattress that may cost $1,000 or more might be worth it. I know I’d pay 40 cents for a comfortable, relaxing 8 hours of sleep with no hesitation every single day. Now if I haven’t convinced you of the importance of mattresses yet then you can go ahead and exit out and keep sleeping like Fred Flintsone.
For those of you still here I’m going to just quickly and briefly go over the different types and why each one has its benefits just to help in the search. There's already way too many brands and deals that you have to sort through so might as well start already knowing what kind you want.
Innerspring mattresses are the most popular according to consumer reports. This is mainly because these have been the popular mattress type since the early 1900’s and the affordability. However memory foam and other beds are trending up. The springs tend to wear out faster and sometimes have audible squeakiness to them. This will usually lead to a shorter lifespan. There are multiple types of innerspring beds like; continuous coils, offset, pocketed and Bonnel. The key if you want to go for a spring mattress is the more coils the better the support.
Memory Foam was invented in 1996 by NASA to improve safety of aircraft cushions. This is the mattress you want if you are looking for that sinking in feeling that cradles you. The good thing is the foam will take your shape but go back to normal when the weight is released. This extra cushioning and support makes it ideal for people with back pain and people who want a softer bed. The memory foam offers pressure point relief, proper spinal alignment, motion isolation, and can be adjusted. The biggest downside is that people say the denseness of foam limits airflow and traps heat. So if you are a hot sleeper you might want to look to the next paragraph.
The biggest complaint about memory foam is what makes this next bed so popular. Gel infused beds work to offset the heating effects of memory foam. The gel is usually infused into the foam of the mattress and is naturally cooler. During the night the gel will allow the mattress temperature to remain cooler.
Lastly is hybrid beds. They are becoming increasingly popular as you get to combine the support of spring beds while keeping the softness and comfort of the memory foam/gel beds. Usually there is a layer of coiled springs on the bottom and multiple layers of latex or memory foam on the top. This allows you to get a more custom experience to your likings. You can make it as firm or soft as you like depending on the amount of layers. With the amount of time and importance that sleep plays into our lives, there is no doubt that you want to find a mattress that will provide you with the best sleep.
